What is a digital locking cylinder?
A digital locking cylinder is an electronic profile cylinder that replaces the classic mechanical cylinder in the door. It combines robust mechanics with modern electronics and enables flexible, keyless access control. The exterior dimensions match the standardized Euro profile, allowing replacement in most standard doors without structural changes.
Design and components:
- Exterior knob: Contains reader and control electronics as well as a replaceable battery
- Interior knob: Allows opening from inside at any time, even without an ID medium
- Locking cam: Engages electromechanically when authorization is valid
- Identification media: App, NFC tag, RFID chip, fingerprint or PIN code

Unlike motorized door locks, the original lock mechanism remains fully intact with a digital cylinder, only the cylinder itself is replaced. This makes it the perfect solution for retrofitting in existing buildings, rental apartments and listed properties.
How does a digital locking cylinder work?
The system works through wireless communication between an ID medium and the electronics built into the cylinder. For ELCON models, the free SmartAccess app handles the central management of all access permissions.
The unlocking process in 4 steps:
- Identification: Hold your smartphone, NFC tag or chip against the exterior knob
- Verification: The control electronics compare the ID with the authorization list
- Release: If authorized, the knob engages electromechanically
- Opening: Turn the knob and open the door
